Malawi’s Parliament has extended its current sitting to August 7, a week beyond its original schedule, to allow lawmakers to consider outstanding legislation.

Speaker of the National Assembly Sameer Suleman announced the extension on Friday, saying the decision to prolong the Third Meeting of the 52nd Session followed consultations with President Peter Mutharika in line with Section 59(1) of the Constitution.

Suleman urged parliamentary committees scrutinising the bills to complete their work diligently to ensure smooth debate once the legislation is tabled.

“Let me appeal to the relevant Parliamentary Committees that will be scrutinizing the bills to do a thorough job in order to facilitate smooth consideration by the House once the legislation is introduced by the responsible Ministers,” he said.

Government Chief Whip Patricia Whiskesi said Parliament will begin debating the bills next week.

“We will continue considering bills, ministerial statements and committee reports that this House is expected to deliberate on, while also responding to questions submitted to the relevant portfolio ministries,” Whiskesi said.

The Third Meeting of the 52nd Session of the Parliament of Malawi began on July 7, 2026.
