Malawi has received a further 500 metric tonnes of fertiliser from Morocco to support food production among smallholder farmers, bringing the North African country’s total donation to 1,000 metric tonnes.
The latest consignment follows an initial 500-tonne donation made in February 2025 and comes as Malawi prepares for the upcoming planting season amid continuing food security challenges.
Receiving the donation in Blantyre on Friday, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Roza Mbilizi described the support as timely.
“We are very grateful as a country for this donation as we are preparing for this year’s planting season. This is the time when we are looking for fertiliser for our people,” she said.
Mbilizi said the fertiliser will be distributed in line with the Department of Disaster Management Affairs’ (DoDMA) vulnerability assessment, with priority given to vulnerable households, particularly farmers involved in winter irrigation schemes.
The donation comes as Malawi continues to recover from a severe food crisis that prompted President Peter Mutharika to declare a State of Disaster in October 2025 after an estimated four million people were projected to face hunger because of prolonged dry spells and soaring food prices.
At the time, Mutharika appealed to local and international partners to support the government’s humanitarian response and efforts to restore food production.
Head of Mission at the Embassy of Morocco in Malawi, Mohammed Oumiyer, said the donation reflects King Mohammed VI’s commitment to food security, solidarity and sustainable development across Africa.
“This donation comes within the framework of the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which is based on solidarity and co-development. It is intended to help smallholder farmers improve agricultural production, increase productivity and enhance their living conditions,” Oumiyer said.
He added that the contribution also underscores the growing bilateral relationship between Morocco and Malawi.
