President Peter Mutharika has officially moved into Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe following the completion of maintenance works on parts of the building that were reportedly damaged during the transition after the September 16, 2025 general election.
The damage is alleged to have been caused by supporters of the then-governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP) after the party’s presidential candidate, Lazarus Chakwera, failed to secure a second term, losing to Mutharika in a landslide victory of 58.6 percent to 33 percent.
After his swearing-in, Mutharika vowed to return to Kamuzu Palace once refurbishment of the main residence was completed.
On Friday evening, the President arrived at Kamuzu Palace after leaving Sanjika Palace in Blantyre, where he had been residing since his inauguration in October. During this period, he also stayed at Mtunthama State Residence in Lilongwe while carrying out official government duties.
In the weeks immediately following his election victory, Mutharika briefly stayed at his private residences in Nyambadwe, Blantyre, and at Page House in Mangochi.
His return to the administrative capital comes four days after he arrived back in the country from a private trip to South Africa.
