Malawi’s Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman has announced that Malawi’s 2026/2027 Budget Meeting will run until April 10, 2026, focusing on the President’s address, the National Budget, scrutiny of estimates, and passing appropriation and tax-related bills.
The meeting begins with debate on the State of the Nation Address (SONA) from February 16 to 27. The Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation is scheduled to present the 2026/2027 National Budget on February 27.
Cluster Committees will then scrutinise the budget from March 2 to 13, allowing legislators to propose amendments and assess spending priorities.
Members of Parliament will hold a general debate on the budget from March 16 to 20, followed by the Committee of Supply from March 23 to 27, where the House will review the budget vote by vote before considering the Appropriation Bill and related tax measures.
Remaining business — including questions to ministers, statements, committee reports, motions, petitions, and private members’ bills — will be handled from April 1 to 10, when Parliament is expected to adjourn sine die.
Suleman urged legislators to actively participate, emphasising the importance of responsible public spending and effective representation.
The speaker also encouraged citizens to follow proceedings closely and engage through public platforms, stressing that active civic participation is key to shaping Malawi’s development path.
