Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja has dismissed “rumours” as untrue that there will be use of electronic gadgets in the counting of votes during the September 16, 2025 General Election, saying “voting and counting will be done manually.”
Mtalimanja made the remarks during the official launch of the 60-day campaign period.
“There are a lot of rumours out there suggesting that there will be some machines used in the counting of votes, hear it from us as MEC, counting of votes will be done manually and will be done at individual polling stations in the presence of all party monitors and observers,” she said.
Mtalimanja said after counting at individual polling stations, the results will then be transported physically to constituency tally centres for aggregation and not for a recount.
Although political parties have already been going around canvassing for support, the official campaign has started today (July 14) and will run for 60 days up to two days before polling day.
On September 16, Malawians will vote for president, members of parliament and local councillors.
