The influential Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) has urged Malawian voters to elect leaders who are serious about keeping campaign promises and resolving the country’s economic challenges during the country’s tripartite general elections on September 16 this year.
The church delivered its message via a pastoral letter issued at the conclusion of its high level meeting referred to as a “general assembly” which brings together three synods of Livingstonia (from Malawi’s northern region), Nkhoma (from the centre) and Blantyre (from the southern region).
“As we go for voting … let us think of leaders who are serious about improving our economy. Let us think of people who will be genuine in wanting to fulfill their promises. We should not vote for leaders who cannot keep their promises and cannot be held accountable,” the pastoral letter, signed by the head of the General Assembly, Rt. Rev. Biswick Kamzongo and leaders of the respective synods, said.
The pastoral letter, entitled “You Are the Light of the World”, also advised Malawians against voting for candidates based on ethnic group, region or religion but rather based on their capability to develop the country.
When they head to the polls on September 16, Malawians will vote simultaneously for the president, members of parliament, and local councillors.
