President-elect Peter Mutharika and Vice President-elect Jane Ansah will be sworn in on Saturday, October 4, 2025, officials announced Monday.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Information and Digitalization, signed by Secretary Baldwin Chiyamwaka, the ceremony will take place at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, starting at 8:00 a.m. The oath of office will be administered by Chief Justice Rezine Mzikamanda, followed by the inauguration of the 7th President of the Republic of Malawi.
“The inauguration ceremony will be symbolised by the presentation of symbols of office, military honours, performances, and the inaugural address. The Government invites all citizens, national dignitaries from the public and private sectors, religious groups, civil society, and cultural heritage organisations to witness this historic event,” said Chiyamwaka.
To ensure wider participation, the ministry has arranged public viewing centres in three locations: Civo Stadium in Lilongwe, Katoto Freedom Park in Mzuzu, and Mangochi Stadium in Mangochi.
Invitations have also been extended to foreign dignitaries, including representatives from the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN).
Outgoing President Lazarus Chakwera and Vice President Michael Usi are expected to attend the ceremony. Former presidents Bakili Muluzi (1994–2004) and Joyce Banda (2012–2014) are also scheduled to be present.
Peter Mutharika, who first took office in 2014, skipped Chakwera’s 2020 inauguration after losing the court-ordered presidential re-run. Malawian law does not require outgoing leaders to attend a successor’s swearing-in.
The October 4 ceremony follows the September 16, 2025 General Elections, in which Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) secured victory alongside his running mate, retired Justice Jane Ansah.
