President Peter Mutharika has appointed journalist Cathy Maulidi as his new press secretary and lawyer Frank Mbeta as Attorney General, the government’s chief legal officer.
Maulidi, who previously worked with Times Group Television, becomes the first woman to hold the position of presidential press secretary.
Mbeta, a lawyer in private practice, has long been part of Mutharika’s legal circle. He notably represented the president in the 2019 election case that challenged the nullification of Mutharika’s earlier victory.
In other senior appointments, Getrude Hiwa has been named Solicitor General, Festoon Maele as Director of Public Prosecutions, Henry Mukhuma as Chief Advisor on Manifesto Implementation, and Apostle Timothy Vokhiwa as Chief Advisor on Religious Affairs.
The appointments, announced by Chief Secretary Justin Saidi, take effect immediately.
President Mutharika, who secured re-election in last month’s general elections after defeating incumbent Lazarus Chakwera, is yet to unveil his full cabinet.
